The History of Travis Heights
The neighborhood of Travis Heights was originally founded in 1913, though development of the area didn’t begin until the 1920s. The mansions that remain present in the neighborhood serve as a reminder of the original plans for the area, which were to create an exclusive district for the wealthy. Today, however, the mansions sit among smaller homes as well as a variety of contemporary apartments. Although the original plans for the neighborhood didn’t come to light, Travis Heights still remains one of Austin’s most desirable residential neighborhoods.
Things to Do in Travis Heights
The location of the Travis Heights neighborhood makes it easy to access downtown Austin and all of its amenities. In addition, the neighborhood is located very near to the recently rejuvenated South Congress Avenue, or SoCo. Here, residents can visit a variety of hip stores and cafes. For those who prefer spending time outdoors, the nearby Stacy Park provides numerous outdoor recreational opportunities.
The historical significance of Travis Heights also serves as an attraction, as there are numerous older homes complete with carriage houses still standing within the neighborhood. In fact, Travis Heights is so full of historical attractions that the neighborhood is currently seeking to be listed as a National Historic District.
The Travis Heights Economy
Homes within the Travis Heights neighborhood are reasonably priced, with most falling within the $400,000 to $600,000 price range, though there are homes available within the low $100,000 area and the mansions can be well over the $600,000 price range. Thanks to its proximity to downtown Austin, many of residents of Travis Heights commute to work in order to take advantage of the excellent employment opportunities the downtown area has to offer.
